How the roommate split works

The calculator separates rent into a shared portion and a private-room portion. The shared portion is divided equally because every roommate uses common areas. The private portion is divided according to room weights, which can represent differences such as bedroom size, private bathrooms, natural light, storage, or privacy.

Each rent share= equal share of common rent + weighted share of private-room rent

A weight of 1.0 can represent an average room. A somewhat better room might use 1.1 or 1.2, while a smaller room might use 0.9. Only the relative weights matter. If every room uses the same weight, the private portion is also divided equally.

Shared utilities are divided equally and added after the rent calculation. The tool allocates cents so the individual payments add back to the exact totals entered.

Frequently asked questions

Fifty percent is a neutral starting point, but roommates can choose another percentage. Use 100% for a completely equal rent split or 0% when the agreement should depend entirely on room weights.

Not necessarily. This calculator uses an equal utility split for simplicity. Roommates may prefer another arrangement when occupancy, remote work, air-conditioning use, or other circumstances differ substantially.
