Use quotes when available. The contingency is calculated on the subtotal and is not a prediction that every move will exceed its budget.

How to estimate a moving budget

Start with quotes or realistic local rates wherever possible. Professional labor is calculated per mover per hour, so confirm whether a quote already includes the entire crew before entering an hourly amount. Truck and mileage charges may be separate, especially for rental vehicles.

Add costs that are easy to overlook: boxes and packing materials, moving coverage, temporary storage, move-out cleaning, hotel stays, tolls, parking permits, and tips. The contingency allowance provides a planning buffer for uncertain quantities or extra time.

Moving budget= labor + transportation + services + contingency

Compare the estimate with written quotes

This calculator does not replace a mover's written estimate. Ask what is included, whether there is a minimum number of hours, how travel time is charged, and what coverage is provided. For a DIY move, confirm mileage limits, fuel requirements, equipment, and return-location charges.

Frequently asked questions

Enter the hourly price for one mover only. If the company quotes one hourly rate for the entire crew, enter that rate and select one mover so it is not multiplied twice.

No. This tool estimates the move itself. Use the Apartment Cost Calculator for deposits, application fees, first-month costs, and recurring apartment expenses.
