5 Easy and Low-Cost Ways to Personalize Your Apartment

When you live in an apartment that looks like a millions others, it can be a challenge to decorate it so that it looks unique…. and as though nobody else could live there but you. In a modern world it can be hard to stand out. When it comes to our apartments, we want to stand out for a number of reasons. One of the main reasons, though, is that homogeneity doesn’t seem to be a gene prevalent in all of us. Some people feel just find themselves naturally blending in, and then there are the rebels. Here are five easy and low-cost ways to personalize your apartment.

  1. Change the lights. Many times, when you move into a new apartment, the lights are too bright and harsh. This can be really hard to live with. No one likes living with run-of-the-mill fluorescent lights. Yet, lights are easy to switch out – so are many light fixtures. All you have to remember is to put them back when you move out. Yet, in the meantime, you want to have warm lighting – lighting that is inviting and welcoming. You also want to choose light fixtures that say something about who you are. Are you bright and warm, or soft, dark, and mysterious?
  2. Rugs can transform a homogenous apartment. If you have boring floors – maybe even an ugly floor – putting down a nice rug can be a low-cost way to completely change the look and feel of your apartment. Putting down rugs is also a great way to make an apartment look more unique. Not only that, but rugs can really make a room feel warmer and more alive. If you live in a loft, or any other living space with cement flooring, rugs can make it much more comfortable to walk around barefoot in your own apartment – you’ll find that the overall increase in warmth is astounding.
  3. Put things on the walls. A bland wall can be just that – bland. However, by putting art on the walls, you can not only liven up an apartment, but you can also make it much more personalized. Many times you don’t need to spend a fortune on art. For instance, you can run to the local thrift store to pick up some cheap vintage paintings, or you can paint something yourself. Or you can place tapestries on the wall for a whole other unique feel. Just don’t go with that poster you found at your local Swedish furniture store.
  4. Paint. Painting is an almost instant way to make your apartment look more unique and personalized. You want to make sure that your landlord is okay with you painting, if it is okay, you can really bring things to life. Painting the walls the color of your choice can liven up a room and it can make it feel more like you live there. If you are unsure of your painting skills, you might want to call the professionals, like Sergios painting.
  5. Furniture. There is nothing like adding your own unique blend of interior design to individualize your otherwise boring apartment. Yet, once you add your unique style of furniture, chances are it won’t be so boring. Just make sure you measure before you purchase things like couches and dressers – you want to make sure you have the space.
